MIRRIEA PHENLATH - our favorite main character. Extremely conscious of what people expect of her, and does her best to meet those expectations. Because a lot of expectations placed on young women create self-contradictory loops, Mirriea is a very self-contradictory person--flirty but reserved; a high-achiever and a procrastinator; a nerd and a cheerleader; so on. She wasn't always like this, but ever since her widowed father started dating a control freak, she's felt compelled to conform. Pronounced "MIR-ee-ah FEN-lath."

CALEINE SAMORA - what Mirriea used to be like, and what Mirriea would rather be. But no one would believe it if Mirriea came to school friendly and attractive, so instead she's invented this alter-ego for herself--Caleine Samora--which she uses when she wants to be more natural. Pronounced "KAY-leen sa-MORE-ah."

ELDRENE CLANDE - A rather bizarre sort of goth. Where most goths wear all black, Eldrene has light brown hair. Where most goths are at least a little subdued, Eldrene seems actively bloodthirsty. She is known to have familial problems at home--her mother, like Mirriea's, places loud expectations on her. Eldrene doesn't like it one bit, but when she isn't griping about her mother she's a lot of fun to talk to. Pronounced "ELL-dreen KLAND."

TAIM DALVEN - As Mirriea has an alternate side, so does Eldrene. However, when the makeup comes off Eldrene has a Y-chromosome. She is really Taim Dalven, a gentle and considerate manling. Like Caleine is to Mirriea, Taim is practically Eldrene's polar opposite, and like Mirriea, he uses his alter-ego whenever he doesn't feel up to Eldrene's particular level of personality. Pronounced "TAME DOLL-ven."

SAMOS PHENLATH - Mirriea's highschool friend and now her step-brother, since Samos's mother and Mirriea's father got married when the strip started. A baseball star and straight-A student, Samos does the exact same thing as Mirriea does: act the way everyone expects him to. He maintains his 4.0 GPA but procrastinates at all times; he enjoys Unreal Tournament but advocates gun control; and his stance on birth control is truly perplexing. He and Mirriea have some issues with suddenly being siblings, but they seem to be working out well. Pronounced "SAME-ose FEN-lath."

RAELE AYOSHIMA - a very quiet sort of person. She hangs around with Mirriea and Nona and doesn't talk much, but she often has very cogent commentary. Not that much is known about her at this point, except that she has a crush on Samos. Pronounced "ray-ELL EYE-yo-SHEE-mah."

KRELLON ORESTES - A nice young man. Despite a strange obsession with math, he is clearly a very well-adjusted and friendly person. That assumes you can get over the math thing. Math can be a big turn off. Yeah. Math. Anyway.

NONA BARQUER - loud, outspoken, vivacious--the very opposite of Raele (but don't worry, they aren't alter-egos like Mirriea and Caleine are). A black lesbian, she often teases Eldrene for only representing one minority group. She is the leader of the school's Gay-Straight Alliance chapter and enjoys moderating meetings. Pronounced "NO-na BARK-er."

BROLNOR PHENLATH - Mirriea's father. A wise, sensitive man, he works for a law firm, where he has a record of not only uncovering large amounts of cogent evidence, but for seeing through to the real issues. After Mirriea's mother died, he raised his daughter largely on his own; only in the past few years has he become acquainted with Kaisa Kirain, whom he later married. First name pronounced "BROL-nor."

KAISA KIRAIN-PHENLATH - Mirriea's stepmother and Samos's biological mother. Recently divorced by her first husband. Kaisa is a leading partner in a highly successful law firm; a good deal of its success stems directly from her energetic, no-nonsense take-charge attitude. She is the type of person who decides what she wants and then seizes it--and throttles anyone who gets in her way. She has trouble admitting mistakes. First name pronounced "KYE-za."

DAVEN THORN - One of Samos's friends. Puts up a tough-guy attitude but is actually compassionate and sensitive. A good man to have at your side. He, Zeke and Samos are all on the school baseball team. Pronounced "DAVE-en THORN."

ZEKE MASTERTON - "A little bit missing in the brainbox" is the best way to describe Zeke. Samos and Daven first started looking after him out of pity, but they soon began to enjoy his company. If you can't figure out how to pronounce his name, you're dumb.

KHALIL [Lastname] - A fellow denizen of Krellon's Math Club, of Indian descent (real Indian, not Native American) and clearly some sort of smoldering sexual firebrand. He and Raele are very much interested in each other. Last name not listed due to the fact that it's several paragraphs long.

RAGNUS - Mirriea's cat. Yes, he can talk. No, that's not abnormal. Some people can hear him and some people can't--Samos can, Taim can, Kaisa cannot. He is extremely wise and highly insightful, but is sometimes limited by his feline nature; after all, he isn't of much use if he's hungry or his litter-box isn't clean.
